First of all, I strongly encourage you to try LOTS OF DIFFERENT BUILDS because your playing style may vary. For sure give a try with both daggers (my favorite) and scythe. You also want to squeeze in about 8 points or so into Beastmastery and use the skill, "Scavenger Strike" for additional energy (since Asuran scan is not a ranger skill, it won't benefit from expertise and can get expensive). I'm not a big fan of Great Dwarf Weapon on a pet. First of all, it is 10 energy, which is awfully expensive for a ranger. Secondly, at least for me, it is really clunky to cast it on a pet during battle who will disengage his target once you have selected him as a target (you can probably get him to stay on target with his targeting icon though...).

Like I said earlier, I really like the dagger version personally.

I would also give a try at doing a pure beast master too just to get a good feel for the pet AI (which is really clunky but once you get the hang of understanding it, can be workable). That's covered well in this thread:

Pets are surprisingly durable and can spike massive damage on a single target. I was shocked how easily I cleaned up the Bison Tournament using a pure pet build. I'd like to so how my pet fairs against some of the end game bosses too.
